Fly Tipping
Fly tipping is the illegal deposit of waste on any land and is a criminal offence. Those caught fly tipping can be prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Every year the Council spends a considerable amount of money removing this waste from the landscape.
If the fly tipping is on public highway or public land the Council will investigate it and arrange for the waste to be cleared. Please note that they cannot remove waste from privately owned land, as this is the landowner's responsibility.
If you believe the fly tipping could include hazardous waste please contact the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 807060.
If you witness anyone fly tipping please record as many details as possible and pass them on to East Dorset District Council or the Environment Agency.
If you see someone fly tipping or would like to report an area where fly tipping has taken place, take note of the following:
- The date, time and place of the occurrence
- What the waste looks like and how much of it there is
- A description of any vehicles involved along with their registration numbers
- A description of any person(s) seen and or other witnesses.
You should then report the fly tipping immediately to:
East Dorset District Council

Tel: 01202 2886201
The Council may wish to prosecute the person fly tipping and will be keen to use your evidence in court. Even if you do not wish to be a witness, or give your name, it is still very important to report these crimes, as this will be useful in a prosecution.
